Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness Bursaries 2026

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness is inviting students residing in the province to apply for the 2026 bursary programme.

Bursaries will be awarded for studies towards the following qualifications:

  • Dental Surgery (BSc)
  • Emergency Care Assistant (Higher Certificate)
  • Emergency Medical Care (National Diploma)
  • Medicine (Degree)
  • Nursing (Bachelors Degree)
  • Nursing (B Tech)
  • Nursing (Higher Certificate R169)
  • Nursing R171 (General Nurse) (Diploma)
  • Nursing R174
  • Occupational Therapy (BSc)
  • Pharmacy (Degree)
  • Physiotherapy (BSc)
  • Radiography in Diagnostic (BSc)
  • Radiography in Therapy (BSc)
  • Radiography in Ultrasound (BSc)
  • Speech Therapy (Degree)

(Note: The department may add or remove qualifications each year depending on service delivery needs.)

What the Bursary Covers

The bursary provides financial assistance for:

  • Registration fees
  • Tuition fees
  • Examination fees

Accommodation fees are not covered.

Recipients will be required to sign a full-time bursary contract with the Department of Health and Wellness. After graduation, bursary holders must complete:

  • A compulsory community service year (where applicable), which will count as the first year of the bursary obligation.
  • Thereafter, the recipient must apply for a post within the Department to serve the remaining contractual obligation.

Internships do not count towards bursary obligations. If recipients do not work back their bursary years, they must refund all bursary expenses.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be South African citizens.
  • Reside within the Western Cape province.
  • Have completed Matric.
  • Be studying or intending to study full-time towards one of the listed qualifications.
  • Be accepted, registered, or awaiting acceptance at an accredited Higher Education Institution (HEI).
  • Be hardworking, enthusiastic, and committed to their studies.
  • Be willing to complete clinical hours (where required).
  • Have a clean criminal record.

  4. Upload the following supporting documents (certified where required):
    • ID document
    • Matric certificate
    • Latest academic results / qualification
    • Proof of residence
    • Parentsโ€™ or guardiansโ€™ proof of income (payslips, SASSA letter, or SARS tax certificate)
    • Proof of disability (if applicable)
    • Motivational letter

Incomplete applications will be disqualified.
