Chinese Government Scholarships 2026 for South African Students

The Chinese Government, in partnership with the South African Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), invites eligible South African citizens to apply for fully funded scholarships to pursue undergraduate, postgraduate, and Chinese language studies in China from September 2026.

Location: China (Various Chinese Institutions)


What the Scholarship Covers

From the Chinese Government:

  • Tuition fees: Ranging from RMB 20,000 to RMB 45,000 per year
  • Accommodation: Up to RMB 12,000 per year
  • Monthly stipend: RMB 30,000 to RMB 42,000 depending on the study level
  • Medical insurance: RMB 800 per year

From the South African Government (DHET):

  • Return and mid-term economy airfare
  • Monthly living stipend
  • Once-off settlement allowance
  • Visa costs
  • Pre-departure orientation and psychosocial support

Fields of Study

All fields of study are eligible, with preference for:

  • Agriculture
  • Biotechnology
  • Computer Science
  • Engineering
  • Chinese Language
  • Maritime Studies
  • Medicine
  • Space Science and more

Who Can Apply?

You must:

  • Be a South African citizen in good health
  • Hold a minimum 60% average in your previous qualification
  • Be available to study in China from September 2026
  • Show commitment to South Africa’s development and an interest in China

Age limits:

  • Chinese language studies: Under 35
  • Bachelor’s degree: Under 25
  • Master’s degree: Under 35
  • Doctoral degree: Under 40

Required Documents (PDF format only)

All applicants must submit:

  • Completed DHET Application Form
  • Certified SA ID and valid passport copy (valid until at least March 2026)
  • Academic transcripts and certificates
  • Motivational letter (max 1 page)
  • Two reference letters (signed and official)
  • Non-criminal record report (not older than 6 months)
  • Foreigner Physical Examination Form
  • Research proposal (for postgraduate/non-degree)

Postgraduate applicants must include:

  • University admission documents (admission notice/pre-admission/invitation letter)
  • SAQA verification (for international degrees)

What Happens Next?

  • The DHET will screen applications and inform shortlisted candidates.
  • Selected candidates will be given instructions to apply on the China Scholarship Council (CSC) platform in November 2025.
