Dept of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC): Heritage Studies Bursaries 2024

The Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture (DSAC) invite South African students to submit applications for the Heritage Studies Bursary Programme for the academic year 2024.

About the Bursary: The Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture (DSAC) invites applications for the Bursaries for Heritage Studies 2024. This opportunity is for students passionate about heritage-related studies, providing substantial financial support for their studies.

Value of the Bursary:

  • Maximum value: R110,000 per student.
  • Covers study fees, prescribed books, laptops (up to R10,000), accommodation (up to R50,000 where applicable), and meals (up to R18,500 where applicable).
  • Funds are payable directly to the higher institution of learning.

Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • South African citizenship.
  • Letter of provisional acceptance/admission from the institution.
  • Not older than forty (40) years.
  • Outstanding/satisfactory academic performance (academic progress report if already at an institution) or Grade 12 results for first-year students.
  • Field of study: Heritage-related.
  • Not employed full time by government, state agencies, or private sectors with a salary of more than R130,000.
  • Students receiving other bursaries or donors for the 2023 academic year will not be considered.

Fields of Study:

  • Anthropology (with a focus on forensic/medical anthropology)
  • Archaeology (with a focus on marine and underwater cultural heritage, and forensic)
  • Archives and Records management
  • Conservation of the built environment, including preventive conservation
  • Collections (cultural & natural) management
  • Palaeontology
  • Museum Studies or Management and Curatorship
  • Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) and South African Living Heritage
  • Marketing of heritage
  • Digital heritage

Universities Acceptable for Bursary: All South African universities offering heritage-related programs, including but not limited to:

  • Sol Plaatje University
  • Unisa – The University of South Africa
  • Wits – University of the Witwatersrand
  • University of Johannesburg
  • University of the Free State
  • University of Limpopo
  • North-West University, Potchefstroom
  • University of the Northern Cape
  • North West University Mafikeng
  • Vaal University of Technology

How to Apply:

  • Interested institutions should collate applications from their various faculties or departments and submit on behalf of students.
  • Applications must be sent to Heritagebursary@dsac.gov.za by 31 January 2024.
  • Late applications and those not submitted by institutions will not be considered.

Note: Institutions must ensure that their programs comply with South African Qualifications Authority requirements. The attached application form, latest academic results, certified copy of ID, and university provisional acceptance/admission letter should be submitted.
