The Oppenheimer Memorial Trust (OMT) is inviting students to apply for their scholarship programmes for the 2025 / 2026 academic years.
Closing Date: 28 August 2025
The OMT will be awarding three types of scholarships to support postgraduate and academic development in South Africa and abroad.
Types of OMT Scholarships Available
- OMT Scholarship for Masters and Doctoral studies
- Covers postgraduate study at local and international Higher Education Institutions.
- Open to students pursuing Master’s and Doctoral level qualifications.
- OMT Scholarship for Postdoctoral studies
- Supports postdoctoral research at local and international Higher Education Institutions.
- OMT Scholarship for Sabbatical studies
- For full-time academics undertaking sabbatical study at public Higher Education Institutions in South Africa.
Coverage Value & Renewal
- The scholarship does not cover full costs. Students must apply for additional funding to cover outstanding fees.
- Awards are valid for one academic year at a time.
- Renewal is not automatic and depends on academic performance, reporting compliance, and re-application.
Eligibility Requirements
1. Masters and Doctoral Studies
- South African citizens or permanent residents.
- Strong academic record.
- Study at a local or international university.
- Must intend to pursue a career in academia, research, or development.
2. Postdoctoral Studies
- Open to South Africans, permanent residents, or foreign nationals.
- Strong academic record.
- International applicants must demonstrate unique, specialised plans or global-level research needs.
3. Sabbatical Studies
- Must be a full-time academic.
- Study at a public university in South Africa.
- Preference given to those with a proven teaching and research record.

Required Documents (compulsory)
- Certified ID/passport/residence permit.
- Recent professional photograph.
- CV (max 3–4 pages).
- Full academic transcripts and certified degree certificates.
- Proof of acceptance/registration.
- Budget plan (tuition, living costs, research costs).
- Motivational letter (max 500 words).
- Proof of income.
- Three letters of recommendation (to be uploaded directly by referees).
(Document requirements vary slightly depending on the scholarship type — Masters/Doctoral, Postdoctoral, or Sabbatical.)
Closing Dates for OMT Scholarships
- 31 March 2025 → For studies commencing July – December 2025.
- 28 August 2025 → For studies commencing January – June 2026.
Late applications will not be accepted. Apply well before the deadline.
