Rhodes Trust Invites Graduates from Southern Africa to Apply for the Rhodes Scholarships 2026

Since 1903, the Rhodes Trust (UK) has offered prestigious postgraduate scholarships to high-achieving, service-oriented, and visionary young graduates from around the world. Ten fully funded Rhodes Scholarships are awarded each year to exceptional graduates from the Southern African region—including South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, and eSwatini—enabling them to pursue Master’s or Doctoral studies at Oxford University.

Degree Level:

  • Master’s and PhD (full-time postgraduate study at Oxford University)

What the Scholarship Covers:

  • Oxford University application fee and tuition for up to 2 years
  • Annual stipend (accommodation and living expenses in Oxford)
  • One return airfare (South Africa–UK–South Africa)
  • Financial support for UK Student Visa and health insurance
  • One-time settling-in allowance
  • Access to Rhodes House support and a Leadership Development Programme

Who Can Apply:

  • Citizens or permanent residents of South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, or eSwatini
  • Enrolled in or graduated from a recognised university
  • Strong academic record with an average of 65% or above
  • Must meet age and degree completion criteria as per the eligibility guidelines

Fields of Study:

  • Any full-time postgraduate course offered at the University of Oxford

Key Dates:

  • Applications open: 01 June 2025
  • Applications close: 01 August 2025
  • Interviews: 16 August – 15 November 2025
  • Oxford academic year begins: 01 October 2026

  • Birth certificate and valid ID/passport
  • National Senior Certificate / A-levels / Grade 12 final results
  • Full official academic transcripts and degree certificates
  • Curriculum Vitae (max 2 A4 pages)
  • Colour head-and-shoulders photo (jpg)
  • Personal statement (max 1000 words)
  • Academic statement (350 words)
  • Names and contact details of 4 referees (3 academic, 1 character)
