Purpose of the Programme

The Inspector In Training programme is designed to train candidates in inspection work related to pressurised equipment, manufacturing, repairs and in-service equipment at Sasol Secunda.

The programme provides training towards roles such as Inspector of Pressurised Equipment (IPE) and Competent Person Inspector (CP).

The IPE is responsible for overseeing and certifying repairs and manufacturing of new equipment. This includes welding inspection, material certification, compliance with manufacturing or repair codes and reviewing manufacturing documentation.

The CP Inspector is responsible for physical inspection and certification of in-service equipment to ensure that equipment continues to operate safely until the next inspection.

Key Accountabilities

Successful candidates will learn how to perform and evaluate visual inspections.

They will also learn how to perform and evaluate wall thickness measurements, magnetic particle testing and dye penetrant testing.

Candidates will be trained to perform in-service inspections on pressure vessels, steam generators and piping according to the requirements of the Pressure Equipment Regulations and relevant internal procedures.

They will learn about specialised inspection equipment used during inspections.

The programme will also expose candidates to the review and interpretation of radiographs, pressure tests and inspection findings.

Technical Training Exposure

Candidates will learn how to support recommendations for repair actions or alternative recommendations after inspections.

They will also support the verification of equipment condition after changes or repairs, helping to ensure maximum integrity and minimum downtime.

Candidates will learn how to predict when equipment may need replacement by evaluating inspection results.

They will also be trained to document inspection findings and recommendations by preparing technical reports.

The programme also includes exposure to detailed inspections required for fitness-for-service calculations, frequency reviews, calibration and setting of safety devices, inspection delays, risk-based inspection and non-conforming products.

Advanced Inspection Methods

Successful candidates will also learn to recommend and evaluate results of high-tech non-destructive testing methods.

These may include:

Ultrasonic Testing, TOFD, PAUT, IRIS, Eddy Current, Guided Ultrasonic Long-Range Testing and X-rays, including conventional and computed methods.

Candidates will also support the establishment of professional standards for service delivery.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have completed Grade 12 with a minimum of 50% in Pure Mathematics, Physical Science and English.

A completed S4 in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy or Welding Engineering may be favourably considered.

A driverโ€™s licence will be an advantage.
