The South African school year runs from January to December. There are four school holidays in South Africa: a two-week break in March/April, a three-week holiday in June/July, a one-week break in September/October, and a longer holiday of around five to six weeks in December/January. Here is a list of school holidays in South Africa in 2023 to help you make holiday plans or childcare arrangements if your kids attend South African public schools:

Learners from inland provinces, which are Free State, Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West, are set to start their academic year from 11 January and the year will then run until 13 December.

Terms are arranged as follows:

  • Term 1: 11 January to 24 March
  • Term 2: 12 April to 23 June
  • Term 3: 18 July to 29 September
  • Term 4: 10 October to 13 December

Learners from coastal provinces, which are Eastern Cape, Kwazulu-Natal, Northern Cape and Western Cape, are set to start their academic year from 18 January and the year will then run until 13 December.

Terms are arranged as follows:

  • Term 1: 18 January to 31 March
  • Term 2: 12 April to 23 June
  • Term 3: 18 July to 29 September
  • Term 4: 10 October to 13 December
