Second Chance Matric Applications Now Open for 2025: How to Apply for the SCMP

If you didn’t achieve the results you hoped for in your matric exams, or if you didn’t complete your matric qualification, don’t worry! The Second Chance Matric Programme (SCMP) is back, and it’s your opportunity to improve your results or complete your Senior Certificate (SC) or National Senior Certificate (NSC).

What is the Second Chance Matric Programme?

The Second Chance Matric Programme is a comprehensive initiative launched by the Department of Basic Education (DBE) in 2016 to assist learners who want to improve their matric results or complete their matric qualification on a part-time basis. Whether you failed to meet the requirements in your previous attempts or need to upgrade specific subjects, this programme offers you the chance to rewrite your exams and earn your matric qualification.

For 2025, the SCMP registration period for the May/June SC/NSC exams opened on 1 October 2024 and will close on 7 February 2025. So, don’t miss out—apply now!

What Does the SCMP Offer?

The Second Chance Matric Programme provides an array of resources to help you succeed. Here’s how it supports learners:

  1. Face-to-Face Classes: Access to in-person tuition that will guide you through challenging subjects and help you prepare for your exams.
  2. Online Learning Programmes: Study at your own pace with materials that you can access anywhere, anytime.
  3. Broadcasts on Television and Radio: Learners can follow lessons and study tips via dedicated broadcasts, making it easier to learn from home.
  4. Free Resource Packs: Each learner receives a free government-issued resource pack filled with essential materials to aid in their exam preparation.

This combination of flexible learning options ensures that learners can get the help they need, regardless of where they are or what their schedule is like.

How to Apply for the Second Chance Matric Programme

The application process for the SCMP is simple. To apply, follow these steps:

  1. Visit Your Nearest District Office
You must go to a district office to register. Bring along the following documents:
    • A copy of your ID
    • Your statement of results or matric certificate (if you have already completed some or all of your matric)
    • School reports (if you left school before completing matric)
  2. Online Registration
If you prefer to apply online, visit www.eservices.gov.za and follow the registration instructions. This option is available for Senior Certificate candidates.
  3. Visit the Department of Basic Education (DBE)
Alternatively, you can apply in person at any DBE office near you. Be sure to bring your relevant documents.

It’s important to note that attending the SCMP does not automatically register you for the exams. Once you’ve registered for the programme, you’ll need to complete a separate registration process for the exams themselves.

Why Should You Apply for SCMP?

If you’re someone who missed out on completing matric or didn’t achieve the results you needed, this is your second chance to earn the qualification that can open doors to new opportunities. The SCMP is designed to be flexible and supportive, giving you the resources and guidance needed to succeed in your exams.
