City of Cape Town Metro Police and Traffic Learnerships 2025

The City of Cape Town invites suitably qualified, unemployed youth aged 18 to 34 to apply for an 18-month Metro Police and Traffic Learnership in Road Traffic Law Enforcement.

The training will be provided by the Public Safety Training College, and learners will receive a stipend of R34.91 per hour.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Grade 12 (Matric) certificate
  • Permanently residing within the City of Cape Town jurisdiction (proof required)
  • Proficient in English and at least one other official language
  • Must be unemployed (students and EPWP staff may apply)
  • Between 18 and 35 years old
  • Medically and physically fit to undergo strenuous physical training
  • No criminal record (criminal background checks will be done)
  • Valid driver’s license (Code B, manual transmission)
  • No visible tattoos when wearing any official uniform
  • Must meet all physical and health requirements

Compulsory Fitness Assessments (Elimination-Based):

  1. 2.4km run (Males: 11 min | Females: 13 min)
  2. Push-ups (30 in 60 seconds)
  3. Sit-ups (30 in 60 seconds)
  4. 100m Dead load carry (2 x 25kg weights)
  5. 20m Tyre drag
  6. 20m Shuttle runs (10 in 60 seconds)
  7. 2.1m Wall climb
  8. Motorcycle reach test
  9. Comfort swim (unassisted)

Note: Pregnant persons are not allowed to participate in physical assessments.


Selection Process Includes:

  • Written assessment and interview
  • Physical and psychological assessments
  • City medical evaluation and drug testing
  • Driver assessment
  • Fingerprint and criminal record verification

Special Conditions:

  • Training runs from 1 June 2025 to 30 November 2026
  • No guaranteed permanent job placement post-training
  • Trainees must comply with the Code of Conduct and pass all required unit standards
  • Must wear uniform, work in all weather conditions, and across Cape Town locations
  • Applicants with previous dismissals for misconduct in local government will be excluded
  • Private work or business engagements during the programme are prohibited without formal consent
