Jakes Gerwel Fellowship: Bursaries 2022

Jakes Gerwel Fellowship invites student to apply for Bursary Programme 2022 academic year.

Jakes Gerwel Fellowship are offering 2 types of fellowships awards, for students who wish to pursue teaching studies within the 2022 academic year:

1) The Undergraduate Teaching Fellowship (UTF):
This is a full university scholarship, for studies towards a 3 year bachelor’s degree at the University of Cape Town or the University of Pretoria, followed by a 1 year PGCE teaching qualification. Students will receive extensive mentoring from expert teachers, experiential learning opportunities, as well as academic, personal and leadership development.

2) The Graduate Teaching Fellowship (PGCE/GTF):
This is a full university scholarship, for studies towards a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at the University of Cape Town, the University of Pretoria, the University of the Witwatersrand or the University of Johannesburg, followed by professional support through a 2 year Newly Qualified Teaching program. Students will receive extensive mentoring from expert teachers, experiential learning opportunities, as well as academic, personal and leadership development.
 

Requirements

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

Undergraduate Teacher Fellowship (UTF):

  • South African Citizenship OR a South African permanent resident with an SA ID number
  • You must be under 23 years old at the time of the application closing date
  • You must be in Matric, on a Gap Year or in your 1st year of study at the University of Cape Town or the University of Pretoria
  • You must be studying or intend on studying towards a 3 year bachelor’s Degree qualification, followed by a 1 year PGCE teaching qualification
  • You must be willing to teach at a South African high school after completing your PGCE qualification
  • Students currently in Matric: you must achieve a minimum overall average of 65% for Grade 11 final results (excluding Life Orientation)
  • Students currently in Gap Year: you must achieve a minimum overall average of 65% for Matric final results (excluding Life Orientation)
  • Students currently in 1st Year of study: you must achieve a minimum overall average of 65% for Matric final results (excluding Life Orientation) AND you must show ability to maintain a minimum overall average of 60% during the 1st year
  • You must be passionate about teaching and education
  • You must apply to the University of Cape Town and the University of Pretoria for the 2022 academic year

Graduate Teacher Fellowship (PGCE/GTF):

  • South African Citizenship OR a South African permanent resident with an SA ID number
  • You must be under 30 years old at the time of the application closing date
  • You must be in your 3rd and final year of undergraduate studies or must have already completed an undergraduate degree
  • You must be willing to teach at a South African high school after completing your PGCE qualification
  • You must be studying or intend on studying towards a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) qualification
  • You must be passionate about teaching and education
  • You must apply to the University of Cape Town, the University of Pretoria, the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Johannesburg (partner universities) for the 2022 academic year

Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your online application (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application be disregarded):
Undergraduate Teacher Fellowship:

  • ID document OR South African permanent residence (certified copy)
  • Current Matric students: Grade 11 final results AND Matric latest results (certified copies)
  • Current Gap Year students: Matric certificate (certified copy)
  • Current 1st Year University students: Matric certificate AND full tertiary academic record (certified copies)
  • Proof of application to study at the University of Cape Town and the University of Pretoria

Graduate Teacher Fellowship:

  • ID document OR South African permanent residence (certified copy)
  • Full tertiary academic record (certified copies)
  • Proof of application to study at the University of Pretoria, University of the Witwatersrand or the University of Johannesburg
