Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) Postdoctoral Research Fellowships 2025

Mangosuthu University of Technology invites qualified candidates to apply for the Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Artificial Intelligence and Mathematics Education for 2025/2026.

Fellowship Duration: One-year fixed contract
Location: Faculty of Applied and Health Sciences, Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT), Durban, South Africa
Annual Stipend: R300 000.00 (tax-exempt)


Research Theme:

“Exploring the Application of Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education Mathematics Instruction: Addressing Challenges and Unveiling Potential Benefits”

This fellowship aims to:

  • Investigate how AI can enhance teaching and learning in higher education mathematics
  • Identify challenges in integrating AI in math instruction
  • Explore the benefits of AI for students, educators, and institutions
  • Contribute to best practices in AI integration for STEM education

Key Performance Areas:

  • Publish in DHET-accredited journals and peer-reviewed conferences
  • Assist postgraduate researchers and collaborate with research fellows
  • Contribute to project management and research activities
  • Build research networks, organize events, and initiate institutional partnerships
  • Co-supervise postgraduate students

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD (not older than 5 years) in:
    • Educational Technology
    • Mathematics Education
    • Artificial Intelligence
    • Or a closely related field
  • At least 2 DHET-accredited journal publications in the past 24 months
  • South African citizens and permanent residents are prioritized (international applicants also considered)
  • Must not reside outside South Africa during the fellowship
  • Must not hold full-time permanent employment during the fellowship
  • International scholars must possess a valid Section 11(1)(b) visa endorsed for academic work affiliated with MUT

Required Competencies:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to contribute meaningfully to collaborative research environments
